The reserve friendly that wasn’t, and kits.
By: timmyg | August 10th, 2009Last week I commented that the reserves were taking on the Uzbekistan U-20 National Team, and that match would be the last tune up before opening day.
But then today the offal announces this:
Supportes should note that the Reserve Team match against the Uzbekistan U20 national team at Motspur Park, Kick-Off 1pm, is a behind closed doors match.
And then the match disappears from the Reserves page.
Hmm, thats sorta fishy… Word is there were a number of trialists (KG, Magnus from Denmark, hell even Uche may have been there) on display.
Switching gears, I haven’t said much about this year kits. And I gotta, say — not a big fan of either. I don’t like the black sleeves and the oddly if not misplaced stripe on the arm. And the away kit looks more like a training shirt than a uniform. Fingers crossed on the third kit.
I guess the run of decent uniforms must come to an end though. The Airness kit — particularly the black away — from three years ago is one of my favorites. And the sleek class of last year’s home kit grew on me.
It seems many clubs this year are going back to the late 80s/early 90s trend of making things complicated if not schizophrenic. Normally clubs who have minimalist home kits (United, Chelsea, Bolton, Tottenham) are getting all loopy. Only Burnley is keeping it simple.
Five days and counting…

Think the game’s still going ahead but they have made it a behind-closed-doors fixture because they want to take a closer look at Troest away from any prying eyes. Can’t imagine he’ll be tested too much by the Uzbek U20s but I might be wrong.
Not a fan of this year’s kits either. The Airness kits might have looked good on the players but from a retail point of view the deal was a disaster.

Because I had jut started following the club and was in Denmark at the time, I’m wasn’t completely privy to all the (mis)dealings with Airness. But its a real shame as its a company I am quite fond of.
I remember going to the club shop for a match against Charlton in October, and only home kits were available. Although I was a bit ecstatic is even be in the presence of such kits, it was strange there were no away kits for sale.
And now I’d rather not support Nike.

I liked the look of the Airness kits but they were of an awful material…not breathable at all… all the Nike have the dry weave tech that wicks the moisture away… I cant imagine playing in the Airness kit because I get hot just watching matches at the pub in it.

I’m no fan of Nike either to be honest. And I’d echo Andy’s point about the Airness kit – having tried to play in it, it was a nightmare. I imagine they give the players a different model to what us mere mortals purchase.

Funny, Dan, the home kit I bought from the team shop seems to be made of a completely different material than the away kit I bought off Ebay. And its not a good thing.

Not sure why people make a big deal over the look of the kits. Fulham could wear replicas of Newcastle’s ugly away kits and it wouldn’t matter to me as long as we win. There’s no such thing as “looking good while losing”.
For the record, I like the home kit (it grew on me) but I REALLY dig the away kits.
