Off to Europe!
By: timmyg | May 25th, 2009Well we lost the battle but won the war — not a usual phrase uttered by a Fulham fan.
On a day where six teams had something to play for and none of them won, the season finale was quite possibly the most anticlimactic. And in a match that I missed most of and saw no highlights of our play on the Premier League Review Show, aside from Zamora kicking the ball at Howard, it was quite the disappointing day.
But that (negativity) ignores the larger picture. One bad tile doesn’t ruin a mosaic, and the meek loss to Everton doesn’t take away from the impressive campaign Roy’s Army waged since August.
The list of differences between this season and last few are too countless and too obvious to list in full. And although teams like Blackburn and Hull pulled the double on us, I really think it was the results against the Big Four that may not have changed much points-wise, but set the tone for the club. And is thus the biggest difference.
Here are the past few seasons results against the top four:
2007-08: One point, 2 scored, 16 against.
2006-07: Seven points, 8 scored, 19 against.
2005-06: Six points, 11 scored, 23 against.
2004-05: One point, 6 scored, 23 against.
This season it was 9 points, 6 scored and 9 conceded in eight games. That’s simply amazing. For a club like ours to limit four teams that boast a combined 500 million quid (is that too low?) strike force and midfield to under 10 goals in a season is indescribable.
If thats not reason enough for Roy to be Manager of the Year, the EPL might as well not even give out the trophy.
And regarding the previous post about identity: will this season, particularly the aforementioned results, be a flash in the pan or a harbinger of things to come?
With about two months before the European journey begins, Fulham are at a crossroads. And I cannot wait for the trek ahead, as the journey so far has been delightful.

It has been a fantastic season for Fulham. Roy Hodgson should take the credit for the better organisation and team structure that has brought success and Europe.
Clint Dempsey, for me, has had a stunning season. If Hodgson bolster the attack then Fulham will look really good in Europe.Posted from
