Johnny Haynes

By: timmyg | October 21st, 2008

I really should apologize for not devoting any time to the unveiling of the Johnny Haynes statue outside of Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Its quite commendable because most of it was funded from us fans. And much like Larry Bird was to the Celtics, Joe Dimaggio to the Yankees, and Ted Williams to the Red Sox, “the Maestro” was the Fulham in Fulham FC.

I guess the only excuse I can come up with is that I’m just some young punk who doesn’t know much about him, and didn’t even follow the club when he passed away three years ago. So I didn’t want to pretend like it was some big deal when in actuality I would be just playing in tune with the real fans.

But after thinking back to Saturday, with the fortunate result and turn of events, someone had to be looking down from above.

So cheers, Johnny, even if I hardly knew you.
