A win in Korea and AJ shows up
By: timmyg | July 28th, 2008Well, at least Fulham got something out of their corporate trip to Korea, beating Ulsan Hyundai 2-1 over the weekend. I won’t go into it because it happened Saturday, and I was playing beach ultimate in Wildwood, NJ.
Anyways, I know I wrote here that I won’t discuss transfer unless they’re officially announced, but it seems the AJ deal is all but officially announced.
And that troubles me. Because the deal is rumored to be in the double-digits. Now, AJ is a quality player with a proven track record. But Fulham is a small club with a small margin of error on its acquisitions (i.e. Steve Martlett). And AJ coming here for 10+ million pounds is a huge gamble.
Last year Roque Santa Cruz scored 19 goals and only cost 3-million pounds. Benjani scored 15 (for two clubs) and cost about that. Granted, those are two cherry-picked examples of amazing buys but they prove that buying gems cheaply is the best way to go for small clubs. Because unless AJ scores, about, 15 goals he is going to be a bust no matter what. When one without much invests that much, they expect much in return otherwise its a bad business deal — economics 101.
And, unfortunately, Fulham just committed that error.

You think 10M is a lot for AJ (I agree, actually)… well, reports today say that Fulham is going after German striker Mario Gomez for 15M, as well. So, we’re talking about 25M spent on a new striker partnership, not just 10M. Allegedly and potentially, of course. That’s a lot of coin for a club like Fulham.
