Tom Wille, FulhamUSA founder and Fulham correspondent for ESPN Soccernet, penned a piece that I wish I’d thought of: Why All the Road Matches After Europa League Ties?

Seriously, Fulham have (counting backwards) gone from Rome to Wigan, London (Roma home) to Manchester City, London (Basle home) to West Ham, Sofia to Wolves and Perm to Aston Villa. Granted trips from London to ManCity and from SW6 to Upton Park aren’t that bad, it still doesn’t do much for preparation.

Tom writes,

Why would the Premier League schedule makers do this? Why was Fulham’s Europa League inclusions not taken into consideration when the schedule came out back in June? Was it a belief among the schedule makers that the Cottagers were not going to get out of the qualifying rounds? It is hard not to think something was up in trying to make Fulham travel so much when returning from their European adventure.

If Manchester United had a similar schedule, would we hear Sir Alex moaning about it? You bet.

Fredrik Stoor started and played 90 minutes in Derby County’s 2-1 win over Coventry City on friday.

Adam Watts did not dress in Lincoln City’s 3-1 win over Blue Square North side AFC Telford United in the first round of the FA Cup. According to Lincoln City’s website, Watts’ loan deal would not let him play. Assistant Manager and Fulham alum Ian Pearce did dress though, and came off the bench in the 85th minute. Huzzah!

Elliot Omozusi started and played 90 minutes in Charlton’s 1-0 loss at Blue Square North side Northwich Victoria in the first round of the FA Cup.

In a rather bizarre twist, Elliot Omosuzi was loaned out to Charlton Athletic. Despite the fact that he was reportedly released over the summer.

The offal says he is “still registered” with the club. And according to Charlton’s offal:

Although technically recruited on a month’s loan from Fulham, England U19 international Omozusi is out of contract at Craven Cottage.

“The situation is a bit complicated because Fulham still hold his registration, so it’s not a normal loan,” said Phil. “We’ve had to take him on a month contract, but we also have the option to make it permanent in January.”

Yet again, a Fulham beat reporter would be really handy right about now.

Nonetheless Omosuzi started and played 71 minutes in Charlton’s 3-1 loss at Carlisle United on Saturday.

Fredrik Olof Esaias Stoor Siekkinen (that’s his full name!) surprised no one by extending his loan deal at Derby County until December last week. He started and played 90 minutes in the Rams’ 1-0 loss at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Lastly, Adam Watts started and played 90 minutes in Lincoln City’s 3-1 loss at Morecambe on Saturday.

Hmm. Not a good weekend for the loaners’ clubs.

Sure, there are only three players on loan and all will be back by the end of the month. But why not see how our lads are doing outside SW6?

Adam Watts joined Fulham alumnus Ian Pearce at Lincoln City on Friday, October 2 and went straight into the starting lineup on Saturday, playing 90 minutes in the Imps’ 1-0 win over Aldershot Town.

Fredrik Stoor started and played 90 minutes in Derby County’s 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Stoor’s performance on Saturday was much better than Derby’s 6-1 drubbing at Cardiff City on Tuesday.

Wayne Brown started and played 90 minutes in Turun Palloseura’s disappointing 0-0 draw with lowly Jyväskylän Jalkapalloklubi. Brown’s third-placed TPS have one match remaining against second-placed FC Honka. Both TPS and FC Honka are three points off first place HJK Helsinki, who face midtable FF Jaro. October 17 should be a big day for Wayne Brown, and Finnish football.

Seems the TPS fans in Turku, Finland have taken warmly to Wayne Brown, and are sad to see him leave on August 16.

More (great) info from Nordic Football, replete with gushing quotes from the loanee about his stay:

“Please don’t take my Wayne Brown away” is the last line of a TPS supporters’ chant composed to honour one of their campaign’s heroes. But talking to NFN minutes after he coolly netted a last-second penalty to give TPS a vital set of points against Tampere United, he revealed that as much as he appreciates his fans’ prayers, they are to no avail.

“I am going to play against VPS in Vaasa (on August 16th). Then that’s it for me, I’ll be going back home.”

…

“This has been exactly what I needed, the very reason I came here was playing games. This has been great for my experience as a player. It was a great decision from me to come here.

“Everyone has been great to me – the club, the players and the fans. I’m delighted that we are doing so well in the league,” enthused Brown, whose penalty meant TPS reduced the gap to HJK to just one point at the top of the table.

Four goals and four assists in 17 matches for TPS are not bad statistics for the player that surely should be a fixture on the reserves. And perhaps Brown will see some minutes for the first team in some cup competitions, domestic or otherwise. Although I haven’t seen him play very much, reliable sources see a tremendous upside. Which is always a good thing. Just imagine if he, Smalling, Milsom, Saunders, and Briggs can compete seemlessly in the top flight in the seasons to come. Wishful thinking, but the thought forces me to smile.

More transfer drama, as Bafana Bafana midfielder Kagiso Digacoi (can someone PLEASE spell that phonetically??) is telling the media he signed with Fulham. After the he said/she said that he, his agent, and Roy got into before, I’m holding my breath until I see it on the offal.

But the transfer we should be watching is Xabi Alonso’s move to Real Madrid. Why? Because now there’s no way Christian Poulsen is coming to Craven Cottage, but headed to the Kop. Rats.

Rich at CCN has some sublime insight into team’s composition, particularly in midfield. I agree with him, but still maintain the defense needs a body or two. Am I wrong?

…of sorts as all but Wayne Brown are/should be? back at SW6.

Seol appears to be deliberating his next move, as his time in Saudi Arabia saw him appear 26 times and score once.

Still no news on Leon Andreasen, but he made 11 appearances for Hannover 96, scoring twice in his half season there.

Lastly the Guardian has some interesting figures about debts and football clubs. Here’s their breakdown:

Accounts for the year to 30 June 2008

Ownership: Mafco Holdings Limited, a Bermuda (tax haven) company, which is owned by Mohamed Al Fayed and his family

Turnover: £53.7m (up from £39.7m last year, a 35.2% increase)

Gate and match-day: £9.6m
TV and broadcasting: £34m
Commercial activities: £4.9m
Sponsorship: £3.6m
Other operating income: £1.6m

Wage bill: £39.3m (up from £35.2m the previous year, an 11.6% increase)

Wages as proportion of turnover: 73%

Profit before tax: £3.2m

Debts: £197m, included £174m owed to Al Fayed

Interest payable: £1.8m

Highest paid director: Unnamed: £228,083

State they’re in: Mohamed Al Fayed continued his extravagant funding of Fulham, increasing the loans from his companies to £174m, the second highest subsidy of any club by an owner behind Chelsea’s Roman Abramovich. The loans are all interest free and during the year £9.5m was written off completely. Al Fayed, resident in Monaco, has had the reward this season of Fulham’s highest ever finish, and he vehemently insists he has no intention of selling.

With this weekend ending the Football League’s regular season, all of our lower-league loaners should be coming back before the summer transfer period.

We think.

There’s a lot to discuss as each player’s story away from SW6 comes to a close. Sure, Seoul, Brown, and Leon are still playing elsewhere, somewhere. But their tales will come next week.

Eddie Johnson was an unused substitute in Cardiff City’s 1-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday. Cardiff City finish the season in seventh place, tied with Preston North End on points but will miss the playoffs because of one less goal scored. (Oh, the irony.) In a full season with the Bluebirds EJ made 30 appearances, starting 5 times. He scored 2 goals and registered 4 assists.

Andranik was an unused substitute in Barnsley’s 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle. Barnsley finish the season in 20th position. Andranik made 11 appearances and 10 starts for Barnsely. He failed to score but did get a red card in his brief stint with the Tykes.

Adrian Leijer started and played 39 minutes in Norwich City’s 4-2 loss to Charlton Athletic. Leijer was not injured, but probably substituted after the Canaries were 3-0 down, and thus relegated, within 30 minutes. Leijer made just 4 appearances for the club, today being his first start.

Hameur Bouazza was a 71st minute substitute in Birmingham City’s 2-1 win at Reading, which sent Birmingham City up on an AQ (to use a NCAA term). Bouazza made 40 appearances total with Charlton and Birmingham. He made 9 starts and 6 substitute appearances with the Brummies; 22 starts and 3 substitute appearances with Charlton. He scored once with Birmingham, and four times with Charlton.

Volzy was a 73rd minute substitute in Ipswich Town’s 2-0 loss to Sheffield United. Volzy made 20 starts and 2 substitute appearances with Ipswich, who finished the season ninth. Volzy has yet to comment on his website about Roy Keane’s hiring, or his future.

Adam Watts was an unused substitute in Northampton Town’s 3-0 loss at Leeds United. Watts made 5 appearances since arriving in April for the Cobblers, who were relegated because of their loss and Carlisle’s victory.

David Stockdale started and made 6 saves in Leicester City’s 3-0 win at Crewe Alexandria. Since arriving in March, Stockdale made 8 starts for the Foxes, registering a 5-1-2 record and helping them seal promotion to the CCC. Stockdale spent the first half of the season at Rotherham United, where he made 8 starts and posted a 4-2-2 record.

From the look of it, Stockdale sure has a future — with or without Fulham. Expect Bouazza to sign full time somewhere else. Leijer may go elsewhere too, presumably to a lower division. Still uncertain about Andranik and Volzy, as their experiences were a mixed bag.

And perhaps Cardiff missing promotion may be in a blessing for us: we sure could use another striker.

Even if its EJ.

So perhaps I was being lazy, or didn’t care, or both, but Seol Ki-Hyeon is still keeping it real in Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal are currently in the group stages of the AFC Champions League, and sit second with two matches to go. And Leon Andreasen scored a brace yesterday.

Eddie Johnson came off the bench in the 75th minute and registered a shot in Cardiff City’s 3-0 loss to Ipswich Town Saturday.

Andranik came off the bench in the 69th minute in Barnsley’s 1-1 draw with Wolves Saturday.

Adrian Leijer and Norwich City take on Reading Monday evening.

Leon Andreasen started and scored two goals in Hannover 96’s 2-1 win over Cologne yesterday. Here’s a link to the first and second goals. Congrats Leon.

Hameur Bouazza did not dress in Birmingham City’s 2-1 loss to Preston North End yesterday.

David Stockdale started and made three saves in Leicester City’s 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe United yesterday.

Volzy did not dress in Ipswich Town’s 3-0 win over Cardiff City.

Adam Watts started and played 90 minutes in Northampton Town’s 2-1 win over Hereford United.

Wayne Brown and TPS drew 2-2 with FC Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi. It looks like Brown contributed to TPS’ first goal from a set piece, but I’m not 100 percent. Here are the highlights.

Seol Ki-Hyeon and Al-Hilal beat Al-Ahli of Dubai 3-1 on Wednesday in Matchday Four of the AFC Champions League Group Stage.

Sorry with the absence of the report as I was obviously away. But there have been two additions to the report, namely Wayne Brown being loaned to the Turku, Finland side Turun Palloseura, and Adam Watts is on loan to the League One outfit Northampton Town.

And whether or not Seol is coming back remains to be seen as the Saudi league ended, but I have heard no reports he’s back at Motspur Park.

EJ was a 70 minute substitute in Cardiff’s 6-0 thrashing by Preston yesterday. Cardiff are currently 4th with a game in hand.

Andranik started and played 90 minutes in Barnsley’s 0-0 draw at Reading yesterday. Barnsley is 21st, just one point above the relegation zone with a game in hand.

Adrian Leijer was an unused sub in Norwich City’s 3-2 loss to Ipswich in the East Anglia derby today. Norwich are in 22nd place, one point from safety.

Leon Andreasen started and played 54 minutes in Hannover 96’s 2-1 loss to Hamburg today.

Hameur Bouazza was an unused sub in the Brummies 1-0 win at Watford yesterday. Birmingham are four points clear in second place.

David Stockdale started and made 7 saves in Leicester City’s 2-0 win at Southend United yesterday.

Volzy did not dress in Ipswich Town’s 3-2 win over Norwich.

Wayne Brown started and scored a goal in FC TPS’ 2-1 loss to FC Haka.

Adam Watts was an unused substitute in Northampton Town’s 3-1 win over Leyton Orient.

And Seol Ki-Hyeon has vanished, again.
